ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pan-genome

Imagine you have a bunch of different Legos, but not just one set of Legos. You have a few different sets of Legos from different boxes. You take all of them out and make a big pile of Legos.

Now, usually, you would just build something with one set of Legos. But since you have different sets, you can build a lot more things than you could with just one set!

This idea is sort of like a pan-genome. A pan-genome is a big pile of genes from different members of the same species. Just like with Legos, different members of the same species can have different sets of genes. So if you take all the genes from all the different members of that species and put them together, you get a pan-genome.

Scientists can use pan-genomes to understand more about a species. They can learn about the different variations within a species and how that might affect things like health or susceptibility to diseases.

It's sort of like having a big pile of Legos to build with - the more pieces you have, the more you can create!
