ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Parens patriae

When something bad happens and people need help, sometimes the government steps in to be like a parent and take care of the situation. This is called parens patriae. It's like when your mom or dad takes care of you when you get sick or hurt. The government also has a responsibility to help people who need it. They try to protect and help children and people who can't make good decisions for themselves. It's a way for the government to make sure everyone is safe and taken care of.
