ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Party identification

Party identification is like being part of a club. Just like how you might have a favorite team or group you like to be a part of, adults also have political parties they identify with. These parties are called Democrats and Republicans.

Democrats believe in things like helping people who need it, protecting the environment, and making sure everyone has access to healthcare. Republicans believe in things like individual freedoms, lower taxes, and a strong military.

When people say they are a Democrat or Republican, it means they agree with most of the things that party believes in. Sometimes people switch parties when they disagree with the things their party is doing or saying. It's kind of like changing teams in a game.

It's important to note that not everyone is a Democrat or a Republican. Some people belong to other parties, like the Green Party or the Libertarian Party. And some people don't belong to any party at all! But understanding what political parties believe in can help you make your own decisions about what you believe in, too.
