ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Patagium

The patagium is like a superhero cape, but for animals. It's a thin, flexible piece of skin that can stretch out and help the animal fly or glide through the air.

Many animals have patagia, including bats, flying squirrels, and even some lizards. When these animals want to fly or glide, they spread out their patagia, which may look like wings, and use them to catch the air and lift themselves off the ground.

But the patagium isn't just for flying. Some animals, like the patas monkey, have a patagium on their wrists that helps them run faster and jump higher.

So whether it's to fly, glide, or run faster, the patagium is an important part of many animals' bodies that helps them do amazing things.
