ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Patch dynamics

Patch dynamics is a way of looking at the world around us that explains why things change and stay the same over time. When you look around, you'll notice that things look different in different places - that's because the actions of people and animals, the weather and other changes cause different parts of the world to change in different ways. Patch dynamics explains how these changes happen across different patches of land or water, giving us a better understanding of why some places stay the same and why other places change. For example, if you look at a patch of grass in a park, you will see that some parts of it never change - they always stay green and look the same. But if you look closer, you will notice that the grass in different parts of the patch can grow different lengths. That's because the amount of sun, rain, and wind the patch gets makes different parts of it change at different rates. Patch dynamics helps us to better understand these kinds of changes, and how they affect the whole patch.
