ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Percentage

Percentage is a way of measuring or describing how big or small something is, but it's not done with regular numbers like 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. Instead, it's done by using special numbers that are always between 0 and 100. These special numbers are called "percentages".

For example, let's say you had 100 stickers and you wanted to know what percent of the stickers were red. You'd count up all the red stickers (let's say there were 20) and then divide that number by the total number of stickers (100). 20 divided by 100 is 0.2. That means 20% of the stickers are red.

Another example could be someone asking you that what percentage of one hour is 10 minutes. You’d take the 10 minutes and divide it by the total number of minutes in an hour which is 60, that equals 0.16. Then you would multiply 0.16 by 100 and which results in the answer that 10 minutes is 16.6% of one hour.

Percentages are often used to describe how much of something is there or how much it has changed. They are really helpful when comparing things, like comparing the prices of two things or how much you've improved in a certain subject at school.
