Perineal tear classification

Okay, so sometimes when a woman has a baby, her perineum can tear. The perineum is the skin and muscle between the vagina and the anus. When it tears, it can be classified based on how bad the tear is.

Just like how we grade things in school, tears can be graded too. Grade 1 is the smallest tear and grade 4 is the biggest tear.

So imagine you have a piece of paper and you fold it in half. If you tear just the top layer, that's a grade 1 tear. If you tear through both layers, that's a grade 2 tear. If you tear through both layers and the muscle underneath, that's a grade 3 tear. And if you tear through everything and it goes all the way to your anus, that's a grade 4 tear.

Doctors and nurses use this classification system to know how to help the woman heal and recover. So that's how they grade perineal tears!
