ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pharming (genetics)

Pharming is when scientists use special techniques to change or modify the genes in organisms like plants or animals, so they can produce certain medicines or proteins.

Genes are like instructions that tell the body what to do. By changing them, scientists can get certain organisms to make specific things that can be used to treat diseases or make new, helpful products. It's like teaching your dog to fetch a ball, but instead of a ball, it's making a special protein that could help people feel better.

For example, some cows have been pharming medicine in their milk. Scientists have modified the cows' genes so they produce a protein that can be used as a treatment for some rare diseases. So instead of making regular milk, these cows make milk with medicine in it!

Pharming can help provide medicine and other important products more efficiently and with less cost. It's an exciting field of science that's helping us solve some pretty tough problems!
