ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Phonetic space

Okay, kiddo, do you know what sounds are? They are the noises we make with our mouth to communicate. For example, when we say "cat" or "dog," those are different sounds.

Now, imagine all the sounds in the world, like the different animal sounds, like the roar of a lion or the meow of a cat. There are so many sounds, right?

Well, in phonetics, we study all those different sounds and group them together based on how similar they are. This grouping is called a "phonetic space." Think of it like a map with different countries, where each country has different people with their own language and accents.

In the same way, each sound in a phonetic space has its own unique characteristics, like how long or short it is, how high or low it is, and how much our mouth moves when we make it.

So, when we talk about phonetic space, we're talking about all the different sounds in the world and how they're related to each other. It's like a big puzzle that helps us understand how we communicate with each other.
