ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Phonovision

Phonovision is a really old way to record things we see and hear, like movies and TV shows, that was popular back in the 1950s. It's kind of like a video camera, but instead of having a little screen to watch the video on, the video gets made on a big record.

Imagine you're drawing a picture, but instead of using a pencil, you're using a special machine. This machine has a little arm that moves around in circles and makes squiggly lines on a piece of paper. The squiggly lines show exactly what you're drawing!

Now imagine that the paper is actually a flat, round record. Instead of drawing pictures, you can talk into a microphone and the machine will make squiggly lines that represent your voice. Then, when you want to watch your video or listen to your voice recording, you put the record on a special player and the machine will read the squiggly lines and make sound and pictures that you can see and hear!

Phonovision was one of the first ways people recorded things they saw and heard, but nowadays we have digital cameras and computers that can make it much easier and faster to record and watch videos.
