The Pit of Despair is a type of experiment that studies how animals can cope with extremely tough situations. In the experiment, a small animal, such as a rat, is put in a dark cage that is just big enough for the animal to fit inside. The walls of the cage are very tall, so the animal can't climb out. The animal has nothing to do and can't even move around. This creates an environment of extreme despair and loneliness, which is why it's called the Pit of Despair. Scientists wanted to see if the animal could still learn, even in such an awful situation. The experiment showed that even in extremely traumatic and stressful enviroments, animals are still able to learn and cope.
