Okay kiddo, do you know what a magnet is? You know how it has a positive and negative end, and if you put two magnets together, the opposite ends stick together but the same ends repel each other? That's called polarity.
Now imagine that some words in a sentence are like magnets too. They only work if there is a positive or negative word nearby. These words are called polarity items because they depend on the polarity of the sentence to make sense.
For example, the word "any" is a polarity item. It only works if it's near a negative word like "not" or "never." So if someone says "I didn't buy any ice cream," the word "any" only works because of the negative word "didn't." But if someone says "I bought any ice cream," it doesn't make sense because there's no negative word nearby to give it the right polarity.
So polarity items are like magnets that only work if they have the right positive or negative charge nearby. They help us communicate with each other by making sure our sentences make sense and are easy to understand.
