Poles in the former Soviet Union

Okay kiddo, so you know how the earth is round and spins around an axis, right? Well, because of that, there are two very special points on the earth's surface that are called the North Pole and the South Pole. These points are really important because they mark the very top and bottom of the earth.

Now, there's something else you need to know about. A long time ago, there was a country called the Soviet Union. It was a really big country that covered a lot of land in Europe and Asia. And in that country, there were a lot of people who really liked science and exploration. So they decided to send some of their scientists and explorers to study the North Pole and the South Pole.

The North Pole was especially interesting to the Soviet Union because it was really far north and was covered in ice. And in the winter, it was completely dark for months at a time. So the scientists and explorers had to be really tough and brave to go there!

Anyway, the scientists and explorers from the Soviet Union did a lot of research at the North Pole. They built research stations there and studied the ice and the animals that lived there. They also looked for ways to use the North Pole for military purposes. But that's a whole different story.

So, that's a very basic explanation of what poles are and why the Soviet Union was interested in them. Maybe when you're a little older, you can learn more about it!
