ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Polyphyly

Polyphyly is like having a group of friends that don't really belong together but people think they do because they have some things in common.

Let's say you have a group of friends who all like pizza. Some of them also like sports, some like video games, and some like animals. Even though they all like pizza, they don't really have much else in common. They are polyphyletic because they don't have a common ancestor, meaning they didn't all come from one original group.

In the same way, groups of animals or plants can be polyphyletic if they have some similar characteristics but don't actually belong together because they didn't come from the same ancestor. It's like calling all birds "flying animals" when there are many different types of birds that evolved differently and didn't come from a common bird ancestor.

It's important for scientists to be able to properly classify organisms into the correct groups based on their evolutionary history to understand relationships between different species. Polyphyly can make this classification more confusing because it groups things together based on superficial similarities rather than true biological relationships.
