Do you like riding your bicycle on the street but sometimes cars get too close to you and it's scary? Well, a pop-up bicycle lane is like a pretend bike lane that can appear on the street, really quickly, just for you and your bike to ride in!
Sometimes, on some streets, there's just not enough space for a bike lane all the time. But that doesn't mean you can't have a little extra space sometimes - and that's where the pop-up bike lane comes in!
It's called a "pop-up" bike lane because it only pops-up or appears, when it's needed. That's usually for a special event or for a busy time of day, like during rush hour when lots of people need to ride their bikes to work.
The way a pop-up bike lane works is like this: Sometimes city officials will put down special barriers, called "protected bollards," that keep cars from driving into the bike lane. They might also paint special symbols on the road or use big cones to show people where the bike lane goes.
When the event or busy time is over, they can just take away the barriers and the symbols and the bike lane disappears until it's needed again.
A pop-up bike lane is a great way for people to ride their bikes safely and have fun on the street, even if there's not enough space for a bike lane all the time.
