ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Prefiguration (theology)

Okay kiddo, so prefiguration is like playing dress up. Sometimes, when you play dress up, you pretend to be someone else or pretend to do something that someone else did.

In theology, prefiguration means that some stories or events in the Bible are like a dress up game. They are like examples of things that will happen in the future.

For example, there is a story in the Bible about a man named Moses who led his people out of slavery in Egypt. This story is a prefiguration because it is like a dress up game for when Jesus will come and lead people out of their slavery to sin.

So prefigurations in theology are kind of like dress up games that help us understand how God works in the world.
