ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Prepositional pronoun

Okay kiddo, let’s talk about prepositional pronouns. First, do you remember what pronouns are? They’re words that we use instead of repeating a noun over and over again! So instead of saying, “Anna went to the store. Anna bought a toy. Anna played with the toy.” We can say, “She went to the store. She bought a toy. She played with it.”

Now, a preposition is a word that shows a relationship between two things. For example, “The cat sat on the mat.” The word “on” is the preposition because it shows the relationship between the cat and the mat. So when we combine a pronoun and a preposition, we get a prepositional pronoun! It’s a pronoun that goes with a preposition.

Some examples of prepositional pronouns are:
- I will give it to him. The word “to” is the preposition and “him” is the prepositional pronoun.
- She sat next to him. “Next to” is the preposition and “him” is the prepositional pronoun.
- They’re waiting for us. “For” is the preposition and “us” is the prepositional pronoun.

Basically, prepositional pronouns help us talk about relationships between things or people. They make our sentences shorter and simpler!
