ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Primal cut

A "primal cut" is like a big piece of meat that comes from a certain part of an animal. Think of it like a puzzle piece, where each section on the animal is a different shape and size.

For example, the beef that you might have for dinner comes from a cow, and if you cut the cow into really big pieces, those are the primal cuts. There are different types, like the rib, the sirloin, and the chuck.

Just like how you can take a puzzle piece out of the puzzle, you can take a primal cut out of an animal. But then you need to cut it up into smaller pieces, like steaks or roasts, before you can cook and eat it.

So, a primal cut is the first step in getting the pieces of meat that we can buy and eat, and it's based on where the meat comes from on the animal.
