The prisoner's dilemma is a type of problem in which two people, called prisoners, are trying to decide what to do. Each prisoner has two choices: cooperate or betray the other. If both prisoners cooperate, they both go free. If one prisoner betrays the other, the betrayer goes free and the betrayed prisoner gets a long sentence. If both prisoners betray each other, they both get a medium sentence. It's a tricky situation because nobody knows what the other person will choose, so each person has to make a decision without knowing what the other will do. There is no “right” answer, but if you want to get the best outcome for yourself, you should choose to cooperate rather than betray.
