ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Private prosecution

Private prosecution is when a person who is not a government official brings a criminal case against someone who they believe has broken the law. It's kind of like when you ask your teacher for help when someone takes your crayon, but instead of your teacher, it's a lawyer handling the case.

Usually, the government is responsible for prosecuting criminals, but sometimes private individuals might want to press charges against someone if they feel the government isn't doing enough to get justice. For example, if someone stole your candy but the police did not catch the thief, you might hire a private lawyer to bring them to court.

However, private prosecution is not common, and it only happens in some countries. There are also rules and restrictions that private prosecutors need to follow, and they still need to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the person they are accusing committed the crime.

In short, private prosecution is when someone who is not a government official tries to bring someone to justice in court for breaking the law, and they have to follow certain legal rules just like the government does.
