Prohibition

Imagine you are a kid and your parents tell you that you're not allowed to have any candy ever again. This is what prohibition was like for grown-ups in the 1920s and early 1930s in America.

Back then, people were drinking way too much alcohol and it was causing all sorts of problems. It was especially bad during World War I, when everyone was supposed to be focusing on winning the war. The government decided that the best way to stop people from drinking so much was to make alcohol illegal.

This meant that people were not allowed to sell, make or drink alcohol. It was a law that was supposed to make everyone healthier and happier. But instead, it caused a lot of problems.

People still wanted to drink, so they started making their own homemade alcohol, which was often dangerous and could make them sick. Many people also turned to criminal activity to smuggle alcohol or make it illegally, which made the streets very dangerous.

The government soon realized that prohibition had been a big mistake. People liked to drink and there was no way to stop them. So, in 1933, they decided to make alcohol legal again.

Today, we look back on prohibition as a time when the government tried to make people stop doing something they really wanted to do, and it didn't work out very well.
