ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proprietary device driver

Have you ever played with a toy that only works with certain batteries? Proprietary device drivers are kind of like that.

When you get a new device like a printer, a mouse, or a camera, it has a special code inside that makes it work. But that code is like a puzzle piece that can only fit in the right spot. So, to make sure the device works properly, you need a piece of software called a "driver" that can talk to that code and help the device connect to your computer.

Now, some companies that make devices like printers or cameras want to keep their special code a secret. They don't want other companies to copy them or make their own versions. So they keep the code hidden and only give it to people who buy their devices. That means that if you want to use their device on your computer, you have to use their special driver too.

So, a "proprietary device driver" is just a piece of software that only works with one particular device. You have to download it from the device's manufacturer and install it on your computer before you can use the device. It's like getting the exact right batteries for your toy - without them, it just doesn't work!
