ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Protection of Classics

So, have you ever had a favorite book or movie that you always go back to because you love it so much? That’s kind of like what “classics” are – they’re really old books, movies, or other things that people still think are really good even though they were made a long time ago.

Now, imagine if someone came along and said they were going to change that book or movie – they were going to make it shorter, or make the main character do something different. You might not like that because you think the original was perfect just the way it was. That’s what people mean when they talk about protecting classics.

Some people feel really strongly about making sure that classics stay just like they were when they were first made. They think that changing them takes away from their original beauty and meaning.

So, people who are in charge of things like books, movies, and art sometimes make rules to protect those classics from being changed. For example, they might say that no one can make a new version of a certain book or movie, or they might say that any changes have to be approved by a special group of people first.

It might sound kind of strict, but it’s just a way to make sure that these old things that people love so much are still around for people to enjoy in the same way for a long time to come.
