ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Protein–protein interaction prediction

Proteins are like tiny machines that help our bodies function properly. They work together by interacting with each other, just like puzzle pieces that fit together. Scientists want to be able to predict which proteins will interact with each other, kind of like guessing which puzzle pieces will fit together before trying to put them together.

To do this, scientists use special computer programs that analyze the structure and properties of different proteins. These programs look for patterns and similarities in the proteins that might indicate they could fit together like puzzle pieces.

Scientists can also do experiments in a lab to test if two proteins actually do interact with each other. By comparing the results of their predictions and experiments, they can improve their computer algorithms and get better at predicting protein-protein interactions in the future.

This helps us better understand how our bodies work and can lead to new treatments and therapies for diseases.
