Puffed rice is a type of cereal that is very lightweight and crispy. It is made by first taking some regular rice grains and soaking them in water. Then, the soaked rice is cooked under high pressure and high temperature until the moisture inside turns into steam. When the cooked rice grains are suddenly exposed to atmospheric pressure, the steam rapidly expands and bursts out of the tiny air pockets inside the grains. This causes the grains to puff up and become much lighter and larger than before. The puffed rice is then dried and packaged for people to eat. It is often used in breakfast cereals or as a snack. But be careful – because it is so lightweight, it can easily spill or blow away!
