ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

REDD-plus

Imagine you are playing a game where you collect stickers. Every time you collect a sticker, you get a point. But sometimes, you may lose points if you make a mess while collecting stickers or if you collect too many of them.

Now, let's imagine that instead of stickers, we are talking about trees in a forest. Redd+ is a program that encourages people and countries to protect forests and their trees, because they provide many benefits like oxygen, clean water, and habitat for animals.

Under Redd+, countries that have forests can earn points (or money) by protecting them and making sure that they remain healthy, instead of cutting them down. These points can then be sold to other countries that need to offset their own greenhouse gas emissions.

This is important because when we humans breathe, we release carbon dioxide into the air. But trees absorb carbon dioxide, which is awesome because they help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. If forests are cut down or burned, this releases carbon dioxide into the air again, which contributes to climate change.

So, Redd+ is like a big game where countries can earn points (or money) by protecting their forests and the trees in them. Everyone wins because forests are amazing, and we all need them to breathe clean air and protect our planet!
