ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Racial issues faced by black quarterbacks

Okay kiddo, so imagine you're playing a game, like tag or hide and seek, with your friends. But imagine if some of your friends didn't want to play with you just because of the color of your skin. That's what happens to some football players who are black and play the position of quarterback.

A long time ago, there weren't very many black quarterbacks in football. Some people didn't think that black players were smart enough or tough enough to play the quarterback position. But over time, more and more black players proved them wrong and became successful quarterbacks.

But even today, some people still judge black quarterbacks based on their race instead of their skills. They might think that black quarterbacks are better at running with the ball than throwing it, or that they're not as good at making important decisions during a game. This can lead to black quarterbacks not getting as many chances to play, or being treated unfairly on the field.

One way this happens is through stereotypes. A stereotype is when people think that everyone from a certain group is the same. For example, some people might think that all Black people are loud or aggressive. These stereotypes can be hurtful and unfair, and they don't give people a chance to show who they really are.

Another way this happens is through racism. Racism is when someone believes that one race is better than another. People who are racist might not want to see black quarterbacks succeed, even if they're really good at the game. This can lead to people being mean to black quarterbacks or calling them names.

So, basically, some people have really old-fashioned ideas about what race can do and how people should be treated. But people are all different and should be judged on their skills and character, not on their skin color.
