Rack railway

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you ride the train, it goes on regular tracks and the wheels are what makes it move? Well, with a rack railway, there's actually a special kind of track that has a toothed or serrated or "rack" rail right along the middle of it.

And instead of regular train wheels, the train has these special gears, called cogwheels or rack gears, that fit perfectly into the rack rail. These cogwheels help the train to climb steep hills that regular trains just can't handle.

So, when the train goes up a really steep hill, the cogwheels grip onto the rack rail and help the train crawl up slowly but surely. It's kind of like someone holding onto a rope to pull themselves up a mountain.

The cool thing about rack railways is that they can climb much steeper hills than regular trains can. That means they can take you to some really cool places that you might not be able to get to otherwise!
