ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Radio wave

Radio waves are invisible energy waves that travel through the air or space. They are a special kind of wave that is different from light, sound, or water waves. Think of them as like music traveling through the air that you can’t hear.

Have you ever played a game of telephone or whisper down the lane with your friends where you each pass a message to the next person? That’s kind of what radio waves do too, except they are passing a message from a radio station to your radio or phone.

Radio waves are made up of very small particles called photons. These photons are kind of like tiny little balls of energy that rush through the air, bouncing off obstacles and traveling great distances until they reach your radio or phone.

When you tune your radio to a certain station, it’s like you’re dialing in on a specific person in the game of telephone. You’re listening for the radio waves that are being sent out by that specific station. The radio waves carry the signal from the station to your radio, which then turns it into sound so you can hear it.

Radio waves are used for other things too, like in wireless internet, cell phones, and even your TV. They are important for communication and have made the world a much smaller place by allowing us to talk to people all over the world without even leaving our own homes!
