ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Range of a function

Imagine a little boy who likes to play basketball. He can shoot the ball from different spots on the court and score points. His mom wants to know how many points he can score by shooting from all the different spots on the court.

So, the range of the little boy's basketball shooting ability is the set of all the points he can score by shooting from different spots on the court.

Similarly, in math, when we have a function (like a machine), we put in numbers (like inputs) and it gives us other numbers (like outputs).

The range of a function is like the set of all the possible outputs it can give us. Just like our little boy can score different points by shooting from different spots on the court, a function can give us different outputs by putting in different inputs.

So, the range of a function shows us all the possible outputs we can get by putting in different inputs.
