ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ransom strip

Okay, so imagine that you have a little toy car that you love. And you want to drive it around your room, but there's a big gap between your bed and your dresser that your toy car can't get over.

Now, imagine that you find out that the only way to make a bridge over that gap is by buying a special piece of wood called a "ransom strip." It's called that because you have to pay a ransom (or a lot of money) to get it.

So, a ransom strip is like that little piece of wood that you need to make the bridge for your toy car to drive over the gap in your room. In real life, it's usually a little piece of land that someone owns that gets in the way of someone else being able to use their own land the way they want to.

Just like the ransom strip keeps you from driving your toy car around your room, the piece of land that's a ransom strip can keep someone from building a road or a building or something else they want to do on their own land. The person who owns the ransom strip can make the other person pay a lot of money to buy it or use it, just like you would have to pay for the special piece of wood to make your bridge.

Does that make sense to you, little one?
