ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Redenomination

Redenomination is when we change the way we count money in a country. It’s like when we change the way we count how many toys we have.

Let’s say we have 10 toys and we want to make it easier to count, so we group them into 2 groups of 5. This means we still have 10 toys, but we are counting them differently.

Redenomination is just like that. Sometimes a country may have a lot of zeros in their currency, which can make it confusing and hard to use. To make it easier, they might decide to group the money into bigger numbers.

For example, let's say a country has a currency where 1,000 of their currency equals 1 dollar (or 1 euro). It means their prices will be much higher than prices in countries that use dollars or euros directly. When they want to buy something that costs $1, it would cost 1,000 of their currency instead. This can make it confusing to deal with such large numbers.

A redenomination could mean they change their currency so that 100 of their currency equals 1 new dollar (or 1 new euro). This would make everything cost less, and it would be easier to count and understand the prices.

In summary, redenomination is like grouping toys to count easier. A country may have a lot of zeros in their currency so they group the money into bigger numbers to make it easier to count and deal with large numbers.
