ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reducible expression

Okay kiddo, let's talk about reducible expressions. Think of an expression like a puzzle, where you have different pieces you can put together to make something else.

When we say an expression is "reducible," it means that we can simplify it by putting some of those puzzle pieces together. For example, if we have the expression 2x + 4x, we can see that both terms have an "x" variable, so we can put them together to get 6x. This makes our expression "reducible" because we can simplify it further.

On the other hand, if we have an expression like 3x + 2y, there are no other terms with "x" or "y" variables, so we can't simplify it any further. This would be an "irreducible" expression.

So, when we're working with expressions, we can look for ways to put similar pieces together and simplify the expression. If we're successful, we say that the expression is "reducible" and we've made it simpler.
