Have you ever had an itchy spot on your skin and when you scratch it, another spot that's far away starts itching too? That's called referred itch.
Our skin is full of tiny nerves that send messages to our brain when we touch something hot, cold, or itchy. When we scratch an itchy spot, those nerves send messages to our brain telling it that the itch is gone. But sometimes, the message gets mixed up and our brain thinks that the itch is happening in a different spot.
It's like when you play a game of telephone and the message gets changed as it's passed from person to person. Sometimes, our nerves can also play a game of telephone and send the wrong message to our brain.
Referred itch can happen for many reasons, including because of a nerve injury or certain health conditions. But don't worry, it's not dangerous! If you ever experience referred itch, try scratching the original spot gently and see if it helps the other itch go away too.
