A relation in a database is like a family tree. Each person in the tree has a name and other information about them, like their age, address and phone number. All the people in the tree are related, some more closely than others. By looking at the relations in the tree, you can figure out things like who is related to who and how closely. For example, you can find out the names of a person's parents and siblings, or even their grandparents, aunts and uncles. A relation in a database works in the same way. Instead of people, you have pieces of information that are related to each other. The pieces of information are stored in tables, and a relation is a link between two tables. The link shows how pieces of information in one table are related to pieces of information in another table.
