Requirements engineering is like writing a list of things that someone wants. It is important because it helps us to make sure that when something is being built, it is built the way that it should be. For example, if someone is building a new car, a requirements engineer would make a list of all the things that should go into the car (like the type of engine it should have, the type of seats, how many doors it should have, etc) so that when the car is finished, it will have all the important things that the person wants it to have.
