ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Retrograde ejaculation

Hey kiddo, do you know what happens when you go pee? The urine comes out of your body through a special tube called the urethra. When grown-ups have babies, the dad's body also has a special tube called the ejaculatory ducts that helps him make his part of the baby.

Sometimes, the tube that helps grown-ups make a baby can act a little funny. Instead of the part that makes the baby's DNA coming out when daddy goes pee, it goes back inside daddy's body. This is called retrograde ejaculation.

Now, let's pretend your body is like a big water park. When daddy goes pee, it's like a water slide. The water goes down and out the end of the slide, just like the baby-making part should come out of his body. But when daddy has a retrograde ejaculation, it's like the water slide is bent in the middle. The water still goes down, but it goes back inside the slide instead of out the end.

Don't worry though, this doesn't hurt daddy and he can still be a dad if he wants to. But sometimes it can make it harder for him and mommy to make a baby. Doctors can help figure out why this is happening and help them have a baby if they want to.
