ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Robocall

Have you ever gotten a phone call that you didn't want to answer because it was from someone you didn't know, but they kept calling you over and over again? Maybe they tried to sell you something you didn't want, or they said you won a prize but you had to give them money first? That's what robocalls are!

A robocall is a phone call made by a computer system, not by a real person. These computer systems can call lots of people at the same time, and they can make the phone numbers they're calling look like they're from someone else, so you might answer the call thinking it's someone you know.

Sometimes, these robocallers are trying to sell you something you don't want or need, or they might be trying to scam you out of your money. Sometimes, they're trying to get your personal information like your name, address, or even your Social Security number.

It's important to be really careful with robocalls and not give out any personal information. If you're not sure who's calling you or you don't want to answer, it's okay to let the call go to voicemail. If you do answer a robocall and it seems suspicious, you can hang up right away or report it to the authorities.
