Rock (geology)

Okay buddy, let's learn about rocks!
Rocks are like the building blocks of the Earth. They're made up of different materials, like minerals, and they're found all over the place. Some rocks are really old and some are pretty new. There are three different types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

Igneous rocks are formed when hot magma (super hot molten rock) from deep inside the Earth cools and becomes solid. Think of a snow cone that melts into a solid shape when it cools down. These types of rocks can be found in places where there was once a volcano or magma chamber.

Sedimentary rocks are formed over millions of years from broken pieces of other rocks, shells, and even dead plants and animals that sink to the bottom of oceans and lakes. Over time, these pieces get compressed and cemented together. It's like a puzzle that slowly gets put together over time. The Grand Canyon is made up of tons of different sedimentary rocks!

Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are changed by heat or pressure over time. This could be from being buried deep in the Earth or from tectonic plates pushing against each other. It's like taking a crayon and pressing it really hard between your fingers until it turns into a different shape. Marble is an example of a metamorphic rock that used to be limestone.

So there you have it, rocks are like the puzzle pieces that make up the Earth and there are different types of rocks that form in different ways. Pretty cool, huh?
