ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ruled surface

Imagine you have a big piece of paper and you take a pencil and draw a straight line on it. Then you move the pencil along that line and draw another straight line parallel to the first one. You keep doing this over and over again until you have a big surface filled with lots of parallel lines.

This surface you've created is called a ruled surface. It's like a really flat road, but instead of being made of concrete or asphalt, it's made up of lots of straight lines.

Ruled surfaces can have different shapes and sizes depending on how you draw the lines. Some might be flat, like a piece of paper, while others might be curved or even twisted. Mathematicians and engineers use ruled surfaces to study and design things like buildings, bridges, and even spacecraft.

So next time you draw a bunch of parallel lines on a piece of paper, you can impress your friends by saying you've created a ruled surface!
