Rut (mammalian reproduction)

A rut is a time of year when certain mammals, like deer, elk or moose, have a special time for mating. During the rut, the male animals become really interested in finding a mate and will do things like make loud noises or fight with other males for the chance to mate with a female. They also might mark their territory by rubbing their antlers on trees or using their scent to let other animals know who is in charge. Females might also use this time to choose the best mate for them. It's a very exciting time for these animals because it's their chance to find a partner and make babies.
