ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

SN 2005gj

Once upon a time in a far off galaxy, a big, bright and shiny star named SN 2005gj was born. This star was special, because it was a supergiant, which meant it was many times bigger and hotter than our Sun.

However, this star didn't have a happy ending like our Sun will. Instead, it exploded in a bright and spectacular event called a supernova. When a supernova happens, the star collapses inward and then explodes outward, shooting out tons of gas and dust into space.

SN 2005gj's supernova was so big and bright that it was visible from Earth with telescopes. Scientists studied the light emitted by the supernova to learn more about how it happened and what it was made of. They found that SN 2005gj had a lot of elements like oxygen, nitrogen and carbon that are the building blocks of life on Earth.

Overall, SN 2005gj was an amazing star that taught us a lot about how the universe works and what we're all made of.
