ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

SSA impersonation scam

Okay kiddo, listen up. Have you ever heard of the Social Security Administration or SSA? It's like a big office that takes care of giving out money to people who are retired or disabled. But there are some bad people out there who want to trick others into giving away their money. And they do this by pretending to be someone from the SSA.

Here's how it works: these bad people will call you on the phone or send you an email pretending to be from the SSA. They will say things like "we need your social security number to update our records" or "there is a problem with your account, we need you to send money to fix it."

This is the scam part. They are not really from the SSA. They are pretending to be someone else to steal your money. And if you give them your social security number or send them money, they can use it to steal even more from you.

So if anyone ever contacts you and says they are from the SSA, be very careful. Remember that the real SSA will never ask for your social security number over the phone or by email. They will also never ask you to send them money. If you ever have any doubts, you can call the real SSA yourself to make sure everything is okay. Stay safe, kiddo!
