ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sacagawea dollar

Okay kiddo, let me explain to you what a Sacagawea Dollar is. It is a special kind of one-dollar coin that was first made in the year 2000.

The coin is named after a woman named Sacagawea who lived a long, long time ago. She was a Native American woman who helped a group of explorers called Lewis and Clark. They were trying to explore and map out a big area of land that we now call the Western United States.

Do you know what a coin is? It's a small, round piece of metal that people use to buy things. The Sacagawea Dollar is just like that! You can use it to buy things, just like you would use other coins.

The design on the front of the coin shows Sacagawea herself holding a baby named Pomp. She actually had a baby with her when she was helping Lewis and Clark on their expedition. The back of the coin shows an eagle with its wings spread out.

Even though the Sacagawea Dollar is a real coin, you might not see it very often in your everyday life. That’s because not many people use dollar coins to buy things anymore. But it's still a special coin that celebrates an important part of American history!
