ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Sacramental matter and form

Sacramental matter is the stuff that you need to have in order to do a sacrament. It's like the ingredients you need to make cookies. Just like you need sugar, flour, and eggs to make cookies, you need things like water or bread or oil to do some sacraments. Each sacrament has its special matter, just like each cookie recipe has its unique ingredients.

But just having the right stuff isn't enough – you also need to do things in the right way. This is called sacramental form. Think of it as following a recipe. Just having sugar, flour, and eggs won't turn into cookies unless you mix them together, shape them, and put them in the oven for the right amount of time. Similarly, doing a sacrament involves saying special prayers or doing certain actions in a certain way.

So, if you want to do a sacrament, you need to have the right stuff and do the right things with it. Just like making cookies, it's important to follow the recipe or you won't get the outcome you're hoping for!
