Sacred–profane dichotomy

Sacred-profane dichotomy is a way of thinking which divides things into two categories: those that are sacred (special, set aside and honored) and those that are profane (ordinary, everyday and not so special). For example, a church or temple may be seen as sacred, while a playground may be seen as profane. Both are important, but the sacred is seen as more special than the profane.
