ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Saint-Pierre, Martinique

Saint-Pierre is a city in a place called Martinique. Martinique is a small island in the Caribbean Sea that belongs to France. Think of Martinique like a tiny piece of land that looks like a banana, and Saint-Pierre is a city right in the middle of the top part of the banana.

The city of Saint-Pierre is very important because it used to be the biggest and most important city on the whole island. But, a long time ago, something very sad happened that changed everything. A big volcano that was sleeping for a long time suddenly woke up and erupted. This means that hot, molten rock called magma, spewed out of the volcano and covered the whole city of Saint-Pierre.

The magma was so hot and powerful that it destroyed almost everything in its way, like buildings, trees, and even people! The people who survived called this event "the disaster of Saint-Pierre". They said that it was like the end of the world because no one could imagine anything like that happening before.

After the volcano erupted, the French government helped rebuild the city, but it was never the same as before. Today, Saint-Pierre is a beautiful place where people can learn about history and see how the disaster changed the city forever. People also come to Martinique to see the island's natural beauty, like its lush forests and sandy beaches.
