A saltern is a place where salt is made. Salt is a natural mineral that is used to season foods. Salt comes from two places in nature: oceans and salt lakes. To make salt, people take salty water from these natural sources and put it into big containers called evaporation ponds. The sun evaporates the water out of the containers, leaving behind a salty mineral called "salts" on the bottom. People then collect the salt from the evaporation ponds, package it, and sell it.
