ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Salts

Do you know what salt tastes like? It is a white crystal that can make your food taste good. Salt is actually a special kind of chemical made when an acid (like vinegar or lemon juice) and a base (like baking soda) combine. This chemical is made up of positively charged ions (called cations) and negatively charged ions (called anions) that stick together to form a stable, solid compound.

The most common salt is called sodium chloride, which is made up of positively charged sodium ions and negatively charged chloride ions. It's the kind of salt you put on your food when you eat dinner. Salt is also found naturally in seawater and in rocks, where it can be mined.

Salt is really important for our bodies to function properly. It helps to regulate the amount of water in our cells and blood, and it helps our muscles and nerves work properly. However, too much salt can be bad for our health, especially if we eat a lot of salty snacks or processed foods. Because of this, it's important to pay attention to how much salt we eat and try to limit our intake to a healthy amount.
