ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Scientific priority

Okay kiddo, let me tell you a story. Imagine you have a toy and you want to show it to your friend, but your other friend wants to show theirs too. You both want to be the first one to show your toy to your other friend, right? So, what do you do?

Well, in science, it's the same thing. Scientists discover new things, and they want to be the first one to tell the world about it. This is called scientific priority.

When a scientist makes a new discovery, they usually write a paper explaining their discovery and how they did it. They send this paper to a scientific journal, which is like a big book where scientists publish their work.

But, many other scientists also want to publish their work in the same journal. So, the journal needs to decide who they are going to publish first.

Scientific priority is given to the person who discovered something first. It's like they win a race, and they get a prize for being first. This prize is recognition that they were the first person in the world to discover and describe something new.

So, just like you and your friend both wanted to be the first one to show your toy, scientists want to be the first one to show their discovery to the world. And that's why scientific priority is so important.
